Our Wilderness Guide Training Program is held in some of the most beautiful and rugged terrain in the South Chilcotin Mountain Park, and to get there by car or horse is an experience in itself. After watching the new students eagerly packing their horses early on the morning of their departure, it is now my turn to hit the road as I head to their camp to drop off the additional supplies needed for their stay.
The steep and winding road to their camp site is breathtaking to say the least. Driving (on the wrong side of the road for this Aussie) along the dirt roads, it takes all my focus to keep my eyes on the prize as they say, and not on the amazing scenery that is all around me. The sheer drop to my left hand side and the narrow road might have something to do with the hulk like grip I have on the steering wheel for the entire trip.
Having dodged the numerous pot holes, played chicken with a Grouse and watched a black bear scampering off into the forest, I can definitely say that my drive was both picturesque and eventful. I arrive at the drop off point and as I step out of the car, I am met with the of the calming sounds of the wilderness; the quiet flow of the creek, the occasional call of a bird and the wind moving through the fur trees. Having delivered the additional supplies, I happily get back in the car and as the sun moves lower in the sky, I am thoroughly looking forward to the ride back to the ranch.
