Here at the ESL Wilderness Ranch, students from all walks of life join us not only to improve their English skills but also to witness the amazing wilderness of the South Chilcotin Mountains and to have an authentic Canadian ranch experience.
One of our current students, Karen, has taken full advantage of the ranch lifestyle and has dived head first into a wide range of activities outside of the classroom. She has quickly become a regular at the workshop on her time off and has impressed the staff with her knowledge and enthusiasm for all things carpentry related, improving her English while teaching the staff all there is to know about furniture building and repairs. Karen has recently returned from a packtrip to the mountains where she was able to work along side the staff as they built a cabin in the shadows of the Eldorado mountain and has shared her story below:
“I came to Chilcotin Holidays to learn English and discover the ranch lifestyle. I didn't need a long time to discover that I prefer working with wood than riding. Salome and Christine took me riding to the River Ride and they taught me a lot of new expressions. Melanie taught me archery and Belinda taught me target shooting and the saftey. I liked it.
I helped Daniel for his project (building a bedside table) and Clementine for her shelf, and I built with Belinda a coat stand for Salome. I built a fence close to the tent that I built two weeks ago and I made a new floor and painted the bathrooms of the 'base camp' with Carl and Belinda. The work gave me the opportunity to learn easier a lot of new words related.
The best of everything was building the Eldorado Cabin. I went for 6 days into the mountains. I rode to the camp and we all worked very hard together all days. We built a very beautiful cabin in a good atmosphere”.
