Going guiding on a pack trip in Eldorado is something I will never forget. It all starts with the packing; it is after all a pack trip. I have to remember it all, there is no plan ‘’b’’ if I forget something. Everything from eggs to propane have to be brought and it all has to fit on a horse: the art of packing a horse. Two pack boxes, three duffel bags and a container of propane. Poor horse, some people will think but all the things together doesn’t even weigh more than a normal adult. The sun is just rising when all the horses are packed and saddled. The first hour is always the longest. Riding on a logging road surrounded with big trees, so no great mountains to look at. Out of nowhere the landscape opens up. Now are we talking! Huge beautiful mountains with great meadows and valleys. This is why we do that we do. I sometimes forget that I am on a horse when in great terrain. The horses run on autopilot and know the trails better than I know my own house. You never feel afraid or insecure when riding on these horses, they are in great shape and know exactly where to place themselves. Guiding in Eldorado is always something special. It never gets boring just to watch the mountains, there is always something you haven’t seen before. It is not just the mountains that are special in Eldorado. The wildlife is amazing. A group of about twenty goats strike my eyes when unsaddling my horse. We quickly bring up the big scopes and look at them for about twenty minutes. Now we know where we are going to tomorrow morning. After a five hour ride up the mountains, everyone istired, especially the horses. The horses are always the first in line to be taken care of. The Eldorado camp is my favorite camp; the cabin has big windows, a great furnace and beautiful surroundings. As a guide, surroundings is the key to a great camp, and in Eldorado we have that. You don’t have to ride for many hours before reaching the top of mountains with great views, which means that no matter how much riding experience the guests have, we can reach great places.
