The Wonderful Horses of Chilcotin Holidays

At Chilcotin Holidays we have an amazing variety of wonderful horses. We have 45 horses all together at the moment and each of them is different and has their own personality! They all are calm and know the trails and alpine meadows better than any of us.

Our horses are specially chosen for their Mountain Cayuse bloodline and some are mixed with Draft which makes them heavier and sturdier; perfect for the mountain trails up here in the South Chilcotin Wilderness.

We use our horses for a variety of activities such as trail riding, bare-back riding, as pack horses on trips up to our many camps and also for our horse logging. We have horses which are more suited to some activities, for example, one of our horses, Mowson, is calm and patient and much more suited to bare back riding than some of our others and one of our larger horses, RBG is great for logging as he is strong and can pull the logs down the hill as we fell them.

We also use our horses to train all of our wonderful Wilderness Guide School Students as they are patiently packed, un-packed, shod and ridden along the rough mountain trails and through the lush meadows.

Our horses are stable, reliable and used to the rugged mountain terrain and are perfect for a Pack Trip or trail ride through the amazing Chilcotin Region.

Our bushcraft and survival instructor Nick went into the Bush for 2 nights to set up camp for our new bushcraft course.

Our survival and bushcraft program is intense and designed for active and adventures people, who want to combine an educational wilderness experience in the stunning 5-Star Wilderness setting of the South Chilcotin Mountains (BC) with gaining new knowledge and practical skills - that might even be used to save lives.
The course will start in 2 weeks. You will learn for example how to build an oven out of rocks like the one you can see in the picture.

“It was truly an amazing experience. “

Eight of our staff members went into the Bush to participate in the first Bushcraft course this week. After three days in the bush they returned to the ranch on Wednesday in the afternoon. Including other things they built there own shelter, learned how to make a fire and how to live of the food nature provides.
“Staying and living in the Bush for 3 days was different form anything I have ever done before. It is amazing how small things like a fire at night, a try place to sleep when it's raining or some self made bread can make you unbelievable happy. It makes you realize that it doesn't take a lot to be happy. I really learned a lot during these 3 days. Most of all I got to know nature from another perspective and became more conscious to nature and all the benefits it contains. It was truly an amazing experience. (Alexandra - Germany)

Birth At the Ranch!

Here at Chilcotin Holidays Guest Ranch we have been lucky enough to have a newcomer, he is not our typical guest, in fact he is here to stay.

One of our wild mares, Cheyenne, has given birth to a foal. He is an inquisitive type and despite having his mother making sure he is always at close distance you can tell that even at this young age the new foal is exited and interested in the world around him.

We have recently posed a poll on our facebook page in order to give past and future guests the opportunity to name the foal. Currently between the facebook users that have commented, the four favourite names are Cherokee, Cinnamon, Jazz and Wildfire.

Birgette Kjeldsen, one of our recent guests and commentator on the facebook page has said:

"He looks like a wildfire, and his mother seemed to be a bit wild too. When we were there in June, our little boy Vagn (almost 3 years old now) liked the 'mommie' horse because she would stay all by herself with her foal by her side away from the other horses.

Visit our facebook page for any updates on the foal and from the Guest ranch at Chilcotin Holidays.

Here are some images of the foal and his mother together at the ranch.

Staff Testimonial of Experience at Chilcotin Holidays

My name is Britt de Roij, I'm 24 years old and born and raised in the Netherlands. When looking for an internship for my study course 'International hotel & event management' I came across Chilcotin Holidays on the internet. I was immediately intrigued. After working in hotels for previous internships I wanted something different, something that would challenge me, an experience that would test me emotionally and physically. During my 4 months at the ranch a lot of my interests where fulfilled and my goals became reality. I went logging, got the opportunity to go to a rodeo in Williams Lake and learnt a lot about the Sales and Marketing department of the business. I learnt the Western way of riding, got the amazing opportunity to join in on the guide school course followed by assisting and even guiding pack trips out in the Chilcotin wilderness. Who would have taught that a girl from a country without any hills would ride the ridges of the Chilcotin mountains! All of these new experiences and adventures made me more independent and able to make my own decisions. I became more sure of my abilities and skills and my self confidence has grown. Living and working in the wilderness has taught me many things. I have learnt about wildlife, bushcraft & survival and was lucky to spot black and grizzly bears during my time here. Now my time at Chilcotin Holidays is almost coming to an end I'm sure I'll leave the ranch as a different person. A person who has learnt to become master of her own destiny and is no longer afraid of failure but sees it as new challenges and ways to increase self-development. I will carry this experience with me and I'm sure I'll often look back on the amazing time I had at the ranch.

Leaving staff members

Beautiful fall is about to spread over the Chilcotin Mountains soon. But while we have welcomed two new staff members here last week, six members of our great team will leave us during the upcoming week. While staying on the Ranch with us they have had many unique experiences, whether they have stayed here for a few weeks or a couple of months. Soon it will be time to say goodbye to people who we have lived and worked together with for quite a while and everyone will depart in all directions of the world, going back to France, England, Italy or New Zealand. Having people here from all over the world makes every day interesting and we will miss our colleagues when they are gone.
One of the last memorable experiences they had was the ride to Lornee Camp, where we have left some of our horses to graze and to recover from our last pack trips.

Leaving great times behind our team mates will wander away. They will certainly look back fondly on their time here so stay tuned for new testimonials to be blogged soon.

Do you remember our little foal, born in July? This young boy has grown up quite a lot. Thank you to all of our fans voting on Facebook for a name. The result is ... Jazz!

Kathy from Canada, one of our former guests, commented: "Love Jazz, because the four white legs look like dancing leggings!"

Good point and the name fits him truly.

Thanksgiving at Chilcotin Holidays

At Sunday the 13th October we celebrate Thanksgiving at our Chilcotin Holiday Ranch.

We celebrate it one day earlier than the regular Thanksgiving, but we had a great Thanksgiving.
The kitchen staff worked the whole day for this great dinner. A big turkey stuffed with dry fruits, Cranberry Sauce, roasted Potatoes and sweet-sour red beets. It was a real Thanksgiving dinner. Most of the veggies grew up in our own garden and we were so happy that our harvest was so fertile in this year!

This month we have a really sunny and warm autumn. In the morning it is pretty cold, but in the noon the sun warms you up.
We enjoy this beautiful weather and it makes it easier to prepare all the things on the Ranch for
 the winter season.
The horses can eat all this luscious grass and get winter-fat.

Just last week the nature around the Chilcotin Mountains looked like a winter wonderland. The snow piles grew bigger and bigger, the wind was biting and everyone was wearing numerous layers.

 Icy landscape around the mountains

Suddenly the weather changed dramatically.
The snowy surfaces on the ground have turned into little creeks now. Other parts have become huge puddles.

Especially the horses feel the change

We hope that the Spring arrives as soon as possible and are very excited for the flowers, the bees and the birds.

Pack Trips Season Review

We had the pleasure to welcome numerous guests this summer. Our guides had the privilege to take them for 4-13 Day Explorer Horse Pack Trips, Hut-to-Hut hiking, Camp Mountain Biking and many other customized trips.
The sunshine delighted everyone at the ranch and we are already excited for next summer!

The last pack trip for the summer was truly spectacular! As the four guest and guides saddled their trusty horses ready to embark on an adventure of a lifetime, little did they know just how lucky they would be. During their seven day pack trip up to Spruce Lake they were blessed with six and a half days of blue skies, sunshine and stunning vistas of winding rivers, glistening lakes and alpine  mountains. On their sure footed mountain horses they climbed up a number of peaks including Open Heart (1750m) and Windy Pass (2200m) as well as trekking out to Hummingbird Lake, a stunning  glacial lake where a few very brave swimmers took a very brief dip.

Klaus out catching dinner
Perhaps one of the most successful stories of the trip comes from our fishing enthusiast Klaus. Up at 5:45 every morning with the sun, Klaus headed out onto Spruce Lake with fishing rod in hand, his aim was to catch us all dinner. After the first unsuccessful day of fishing, we had our doubts joking that maybe he would have better luck catching a Moose, but how wrong were we? Klaus successfully caught us the delicious rainbow trout as promised and we cooked it over an open fire. He is still yet to catch a Moose!

Nature Deficit Disorder

Do you have Nature Deficit Disorder?

LandscapeAs humans we are part of nature yet outdoor activity in the natural environment has taken a back seat to the electronic age leaving us feeling disconnected from nature, and life in general. Recent studies have shown that this lack of routine contact with nature, especially in children, is substantially contributing to a numerous physical and psychological health problems such as childhood obesity, asthma, attention-deficit disorder, and mental health problems related to stress, anxiety and depression. This human cost of alienation from nature has been by author Richard Loub as Nature Deficit Disorder (NDD). It is serious, it is real, but the good news is that the solutions to this problem are right in our own back yards.

Chilcotin Holidays knows how important having contact with the natural environment is for peoples overall health and well-being and are committed to being part of the solution. Our outdoor education programs and experiences are tailored to help foster creativity and promote unstructured time in the environment, where people are free to use all their senses to play and explore as they wish. Simply living in "high-nature conditions", such as the environment we offer here, buffers people against the effect of stressful life events by helping them to develop the capability and skills to analyze and engage in problem solving which allows them to make informed and responsible decisions in all areas of their life.

Dear reader!

Please excuse our silence for the past month, we have been very busy finishing up our 'darling' project - our new Website! Now that we have finished and it is working and running, we are more than happy to present you our new online presence which reflects our values and believes in a better way than before.

We have witnessed the transformative power of nature experiences over the past 25 years. Not only in us, but also in our visitor's and student's emotional, physical and mental well-being regardless of their length of stay.

We have found through our own experiences at Chilcotin Holidays that this nature rich environment has not only improved our life's quality, but has given our life more purpose and must indeed be essential to life.

In one of our former posts we wrote about the seriousness of humankind's alienation from nature and all the physical and psychological problems that come with this lack of contact with nature. This so called Nature Deficit-Disorder (NDD) is a serious and very real problem and we are glad we can be a part of the solution!

Our beautiful meadows full of wild growing flowers, our pristine lakes and rivers and the stunning views from our mountain ridges here in the South Chilcotin Mountains are a truly splendid way to recuperate and re-connect with nature.

We believe that every encounter with nature, no matter how brief, has the potential to change a life and we live this belief by offering unparalleled wilderness access as a solution for our society’s extreme disconnection from nature.

We want to share our vision and passion for the wilderness with you.
